Overall we are very happy with our robot as it turned out as we set out to make it. But we were very disappointed that it did not work as we put in numerous hours on the electronics aspect of our bot . We are still unsure why it did not work as the flow chart worked and the soldering was of a good standard. The process of being able to spray our names and create on the bot which we discussed with Seamus Harold worked a treat which was also rewarding and in hindsight side even tho our bot didn’t work we learned a considerable amount from the module.

Suggestion to improve the module:

  • I feel that we hand not enough hand s on time given to soldering up circuits as complicated as the 1 for this module this caused people to encounter many problems as we in the past had only soldered and designed simple circuits so when we encounter difficulties.we were in many case unable to resolve them.
Ways of solving this:
  • A way of encountering this problem would be to get us to carry out many small projects which would mean us coming up with simpler type circuits like the one for the robot and get us more use to over coming problems like the ones we encountered. Not just soldering small led type projects like we have done.

Our finished Bot:   Leave a comment

Our Bot turned out quite well. It was a direct reproduction of the design which we came up with back in January and meet all the requirements set out to use.

  • Robot must not exceed 1KG in weight.
  • The dimensions were not to exceed 250mm x 200mm
  • Only two DC motors could be used.
Finished Bot: Here we can see how our finished bot turned out as planed and looks identical to the bot which we designed. We feel our Bot looks well with the color and laser work and spraying rely setting it off this is pleasing as numerous hours went it getting this right . It also shows how successful the process of laser cutting the crest and names by using masking tape i would recommend this way of caring out this type of procedure in the future.
Here we can see how the bot is just under 1kg this is very important as it is a requirement but it also shows how we were able to erect a carry out or plan and implement it in order to meet the requirement of having our bot under 1 kg.

Our modified design:   Leave a comment

We decided to change our design after a chat with the TA (Paddy) and Seamus Harold. In our original design the top is fitted ‘into’ the bottom bowl. See the pictures below to understand this.

Because we feel this would be very difficult to achieve to a high degree of accuracy we modified our design slightly.

We have gone with a square top half that will incorporate the electronics of the robot. It will simply be fitted to the bowl feature using nuts and bolts. The base of the cube and the top of the bowl parts are horizontal and will fit flush together.

Our Circuit.   Leave a comment

Here is a picture of ore circuit. This circuit was made and programed to do the appropriate operation which our bot is required.

  • Move forwards and backwards (spin).
  • Do not go outside the black ring around the platform.
  • Sense and move away from the approaching bot.
Our circuit soldered up this is how our circuit looked before we put on the wires on off board conpomponents we said we would put put up the picture of it as this stage as it is cleared without all the wires so the viewer can make out what we were trying to achieve and how it matches to our circuit done out on circuit wizard which we v posted below.

We bought our two motors and ultra sonic from a compaany in England and there were between the 3 of use including the shipping 75euro.

Spraying our Bot.   Leave a comment

As already seen we masking taped our bot in the designated area before laser cutting the design out to maximize design. 

Precautions to be taken when and before spraying.

  • Make sure all areas which you do not want to get spray on are well covered with paper masking tape etc. We used masking tape.
  • Make sure you carry out your spraying in a well ventilated area.
  • Do not spray to near to your pieces as it will cause a run . Mist on spray and spray it a couple of time to eliminate runs.
  • Peel off masking tape gently to make sure not to pull off paint with the tape.

We feel that the idea real worked well as a you can see the tone tone image of the names and the perspex does give a good feature and looks very well. This was also carried out for the crest logo on the sides for our bot.
What we would do differently if we were to do it again.
  • We feel if we would have made the lettering larger and maybe all capital it would have been easier to peal off the small individual pieces such as the little bits better lower case e and a letters. 
  • I would have like to ave seen what the it would have been like with a  different color for each name this mite have made the feature of the names being at different depth more obvious.

Manufacturing of wheels and holding device for wheels and motor.   Leave a comment

We decided we would make our own wheels for our bod. There were many benefits we feeled we could gain from this.

  • Our wheels will be able to be in perfect proportion to our robot.
  • We will be able to fix our motors straight onto our wheels which will save us a lot of time and hassle.

Support for wheels for underneath bot :

We laser cut a piece which would fit inside the base of our bot which we spined. This piece which we laser cut would provide a place for the motors to sit and the wheels project through.

Laser cutting our sides.   Leave a comment

There three of us were very anxious to incorporate laser cutting into our robot as none of us hard ever rely used it machine much before so we wanted to gain so conference on it. Once agin we discussed what we hope to achieve with Seamus Harold and he was most helpful and he set us off in the right direction.  After our crash course on how to use the software we decide we wanted our sides to have different colours incorporated into them . We needed to come up with a way of doing this we came up with the idea of taping off the sides and the laser cutting out the lettering or creat which we wanted for our robot. This would alow the laser cutter to just cut of the tape where the crest or writing were going so we could then spray the piece , then peel off the tape this would give us the two-tone piece we desired.

We encountered a few problem when trying to do this.

  • First we tried leaving on the plastic on the material so the cutter would only cut out the shape we wanted this didn’t work very well as shown below.
  • By leaving on th plastic on the perspex the plastic melted into the shape we wanted cut out the was not ideal but by taking off the plastic and then putting on the masking tape we were able to resolve this.
  • Taking off too much with the laser cuter caused the shape being cut to come out to rough but after adjusting the cutter to only take out a small bit at a time and going over the piece two or three times we were able to get the finish we needed.

 

  

On the right we see how the piece looked before the plastic was peeled off. On the left we see once the plastic was peeled off we could only vaguely see the writing this was not good enough so we knew we must change our approach.

 

 

 Here we see how we taped up the piece and the laser cutting taking place. These didnt give a high enough quality finish but once we decided to peel off the plastic first and just use the tape the piece came out well and we were happy with the finish.

One of the pieces finish we can see how clearly the names came out by using the masking tape only method .

For people tinking of using this method them self we would recommend to:

  • Make sure the setting on the laser cutter a correct to the material being used. Take it slow and go over the piece 2 or 3 or even more times as it will give a better finish.
  • Make sure to use the right types of perspex there are two types available to us and only one of them is suitable for laser cutting.
  • Dont forget to turn on the extractor as the fumes can be harmful.
  • If u require to spay a creat or writing like we did on a piece or different colour using the masking take is a very easy and affective method. But set the speed slow go over the piece a few times and gently scrap out the dust out of the shape which was cut using a very small object like a needle file or nail.
